Why do the books contain large words, like “deficiency” and “protein” if they are meant for little kids?

These words are meant to challenge vocabulary skills. Studies have shown in the U.S., vocabulary is actually shrinking, our writing and spelling skills worsening! Most of the time the surrounding words will provide enough information for children to pick up on what the difficult words mean. At other times, the book will explain what the large word means.
