Why do the Basque separatists plant bombs in Spain but not in France?
Basque terrorists are invariably “Spanish” from the Spanish side of the border. The French Basque Country is politically a world away from the Spanish Basque country. Spain was a dictatorship for many years and under Franco a huge “resistance ” movement started and Basque Nationalism grew. Basque Nationalist feeling in the Spanish territory is quite common although support for E.T.A. is actually near to nil. Basque terrorists are frequently arested in France as they flee easily over the border when hunted by Spanish police. Basque Nationalist or a true Basque identity doesn´t really exist in the French Basque Country. Euskera the Basque language is spoken but not so much as in Spain and there is no real social conflict. Nothing would be achieved by planting bombs in France as it is the Spanish Government and Spanish anti-terorrist laws that the terrorists wish to pressurize with their bombs and killings.
