Why do the alarmists believe its a problem because the glaciers are melting?
The ice caps have been melting since the end of the last Ice Age. Mountain glaciers have gone through countless cycles of expansion and retreat, some global some regional some local. Presently most of them are melting. In and of itself, you’re right, that’s not probative of anything. It does mean reduced drinking supply for some locations, but there’s no necessary link to man-made global climate change. In fact, in many instances it’s the direct result of local water and land use. Mankind does affect climate, particularly local climate. It’s the notion that when I have to drive to Queens on business that I’m causing droughts in Africa that’s subject to question.
Because of the enormous amount of cost, the billions of tax dollars in tax dollars the deniers want to have us pay. It it the deniers who want extraordinary taxes to have governments rebuild infrastructure. Rather than implement a free-market solution to slow warming to an adaptable rate, deniers want to tax heavily to have government rebuild infra-structure. The taxes that will be required will be an immense burden that will slow economies and move resources from productive services. As every paleoclimatologist will tell you, the natural warming of the earth was very very slow and peaked about 6,000 years ago. Natural warming and cooling is very slow, taking tens of thousands of years rather than decades. The melting of the glaciers are leading to multiple problems. Most urgent is the acceleration of warming due to decreased reflection of sunlight, but also decreasing salination of the oceans and future risks of water shortages.
