Why do Thai Ridgeback puppies cost so much money!?
Thai Ridgebacks are one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. All breeders have to import dogs from Thailand or Europe as most of the dogs here in the US are too closely related. Importing puppies costs thousands and the puppy may not even grow up to be breedable. It takes 2 years to find out. Alternatively we have to take foreign stud via AI. Attempting AI can cost $3-4K and that may not even result in successful pregnancy! These costs are in addition to the thousands of dollars in vet fees for health testing, routine care for mom and puppies and also the equipment and supplies necessary to house and care for a litter properly. Add to that the cost of food. My last litter consumed over $900 in food alone. Then there are the numerous hours it takes to raise and care for a litter which often means time taken off of work.
