Why do teachers make such crappy wages?
Because unlike many other professions, teachers are paid out of taxes that are taken in by the city, county, state and federal governments, not out of the profits. (as are police officers, fire fighters and the military) Unfortunately, the same government that provides the funds for these professions, also chooses how much is available each year and they are pressured by other priorities and interests. In addition, the individual school districts pay administrators very large salaries and other perks, which cuts into the available monies to pay teachers. If only teachers provided entertainment. Think of how much actors, sports players and musicians are paid for their efforts, which do not have anywhere near the long term effect of a good teacher. It is the way it has always been. When I thought about going into teaching back in the 70’s, my Dad (who was a teacher/administrator for over 30 years) recommended against it. He said it was a thankless job with low pay.
