Why do substances move along TLC plate at different rates?

I believe different substances have differing affinities (attraction to) the material on the TLC plate (usually Al2O3, SiO2 or related materials). Materials that attract strongly to the plate material are less effectively dragged upwards with the moving solvent front than ones that attract very little to the TLC plate material.
