Why do substances analyzed in both the analysis charts and the Specify Criteria tool often produce different results?
By design, the analysis charts and the Specify Criteria tool work somewhat differently – particularly in how they handle properties provided as ranges or with tolerances. Whereas an analysis chart plots the midpoint of a property value that is a range or includes a tolerance value, the Specify Criteria tool searches against the full range of values for that property. Because property value ranges for different substances are more likely to overlap than are single, discrete values, more property values tend to match the specified criteria. In addition, some property values entered by the user in the Specify Criteria tool are adjusted slightly to allow for rounding imprecision and to provide recall for all eligible substances. Occasionally, this adjustment may result in identification of substances with property values outside the bounds of the values requested by the user. Typically, as a result, more substances are found by entering a specific numeric value for a property in the Specif
