Why do students need bus passes to travel on contract buses?
A. Not all students who travel on school contract buses are entitled to free travel. There may be some students who pay for a farepaying place on the bus or Further Education students who are entitled to travel on payment of an annual charge. The bus pass system, therefore, ensures that only students who are entitled to free transport or have paid for a space, travel on the bus. The bus pass system also ensures that loadings on the bus are regulated so that everybody has a seat. Without this management there is a risk that students, who are entitled to free travel and who board at the last pick up point in the morning, would not have a seat on the bus. Finally, the bus pass can help the driver to identify any child whose behaviour is unacceptable. Experience shows that poor behaviour is encouraged if children feel that they cannot be identifi ed.
