Why do students have to go through a placement procedure in the Chinese language program whiles other language programs at UBC do not seem to require so?

Since, unlike other language programs, many of our students are heritage language speakers who have had previous learning experience of Chinese in different schools and countries, it is very important that they are placed appropriately in our courses according to their level of proficiency.
