Why do some priests and brothers in religious communities dress in clerical habits while others don ?
One of the primary reasons for wearing a habit is that it is instantly recognized as a symbol of their faith and commitment. Another frequent reason for religious garb is that it is simple in style and, therefore, a way to live out the vow of poverty. A sister, brother, or priest who wears a habit may own just two or three changes of dress. Some communities also regard the habit as a sign of penitence for them. Religious communities which have opted to wear street clothes may believe that religious dress creates an undesirable barrier between them and laity with whom they work. The original reason for the habit may have been to match the dress of the common people; wearing contemporary street clothes continues that tradition.
