Why do some pilot retirees have claims for non-qualified pension benefits?
The non-qualified pension plans were terminated during the bankruptcy and payments from those plans stopped. The claims for the non-qualified pension benefits are part of two settlement agreements approved by the Bankruptcy Court. Why do some retirees and survivors have claims as part of health benefit changes? In October the Bankruptcy Court approved changes to retiree healthcare benefits for Delta retired pilots and survivors as well as Delta retired ground and flight attendant employees and survivors. The changes were part of agreements between Delta and pilot and ground/flight attendant retiree committees established by the Bankruptcy Court which contemplate claims for the affected retirees and survivors. The retiree healthcare changes became effective Jan 1, 2007 and will deliver approximately $50 million in annual savings.
