Basically, because they think that, if they were God, they would end all the suffering. Assuming God to have infinite power and to have infinite knowledge, they think that he must either be cruel, or indifferent, or that he could not exist at all. So if they had such powers, they would use them to zap all the baddies before they could carry out their evil actions, and to stop volcanoes, earthquakes and suchlike. The arrogance of such thinking is breathtaking! It actually demonstrates the reason why humanity suffers so much. God is being blamed for the results of mankind’s sin! It’s just Adam’s old “The woman thou gavest me” excuse in disguise. Until people face squarely up to God’s diagnosis for the suffering in the world – mankind’s sin – they will never understand why there is such sufering.
