Why do some people put egg shell in coffee grounds?

Adding egg shell to the grounds of coffee is said to take away some of the bitter taste that can be associated with coffee. I have personally never tried shell in my coffee although I am sure it is better than what the local Shell station sells. I believe this to be a fairly rare practice now.
