Why do some people make freedom of speech their golden ticket to be mean?

As much I don’t like a lot of the mean and offensive stuff some people say, freedom of speech is meant to protect unpopular speech. As long as the speech isn’t threatening in some way, there isn’t much that can be done about it. Look at it this way–when one is rude and offensive, it shows how ignorant they are.
