Why Do Some People Develop BPD?
At one point, BPD was believed to be caused by faulty parenting, and many families felt unfairly blamed. There was also a common misconception that people with this disorder had a character weakness and should have been able to “snap out of it.” This is not the case, and it is important to understand that those who suffer from BPD are not intentionally holding themselves back from correcting their behavior. While the exact cause is not yet known, it is understood that the disorder most often occurs during periods of increased stress or at times of significant personal difficulty in the person’s life.
