Why do some men avoid divorce?
They?ll turn their back on their marriages, and run off with a blonde; or they’ll set up house with a brunette; or they’ll install a club hostess in their flats in town – but they won’t get divorced. Who are these men who seem to want to stay married to women they can no longer even stand to live with? Usually they’ve been married a long time. And some men can’t bear change, particularly when they get older. Sometimes they’re racked with guilt, too. They know that in middle age, their wives aren’t likely to get married again, and they know they’ve broken their spirits by running off with a younger model. I think some men find it just too cruel to instigate divorce on top of everything else. They may feel they owe it to their wives, who are usually the mothers of their children (adopt reverential tone here), to leave them with status, something that no divorce settlement, however generous, can ever bestow.
