Why do some individuals who have Business Activity Codes of M or C have Inc or PC after their names?
Business activity C and M stand for practitioner and mid level practitioner respectively. However, there are some instances were they could also stand for either an incorporated individual or a business. Business activity C is for practitioners, however, practitioners can incorporate themselves so some doctors register with DEA as John Smith, M.D., P.C. or John Smith, M.D., INC. These registrants are individuals but they want PC or INC by their name to make it clear that they are also a corporation. Business activity M is for mid level practitioners but that term can be misleading. An M business activity can signify a Nurse Practitioner, Physician’s Assistant, etc., these are individuals, however, we also register, ambulance services, nursing homes, animal shelters, etc. as mid level practitioners. Consequently business activity M could stand for and individual (e.g. a nurse practitioner) or a business (e.g. an animal shelter). It’s up to your customer how they want to handle these spe
