Why do some images captured in low light look darker in Playback mode than they did on the LCD while the image was being composed?

The Bright Capture technology in the Stylus 740 actually lightens the image on the LCD so that it is easy to compose subjects in both bright and dim lighting situations. To maximize the effect of Bright Capture technology on images captured in low light, be sure to select a Bright Capture-enabled mode prior to shooting so that captured images will appear similar in Playback to the way they are displayed when the image is composed.
