Why do some humans loath their return?
Wildlife biologist Douglas Chadwick lives in wolf country in Montana. He writes in the March issue of National Geographic “The West is getting wilder by the hour.” The full story can be read here. Chadwick writes about the impact made by the wolf’s resurgence after Canis lupus were eradicated in the 1930s. Wildlife activists love them, but their passion isn’t shared by all. He takes an honest look at the many issues their return brings to those living in the West, where they compete with humans for meat, kill livestock and apparently make the woods seem unsafe. But his story also sympathizes with the wolves when he talks about their delisting in 2008 (taken off the Endangered Species List). For instance in Idaho, the hunting season for wolves has been extended until March 31 or until a quota is met. “The change could open the door to hunters traveling by snowmobile and to the killing of pregnant females,” he writes.
