Why do some countries suffer from flooding AND droughts?
It doesn’t seem fair, does it? Two possible reasons – but both involve climate. One reason would be the country is large enough to have local climates very different from each other. The US has large deserts – the product of extended drought – but also very wet areas prone to flooding, like the Gulf Coast during hurricanes. These areas are not close to each other, but the US is a big place. The other example would be areas in the tropics. You have only two seasons, wet and dry. During the wet season it can rain continuously for weeks. You can get serious flooding. Then the dry season sets in and the rain stops completely for six full months. You get drought and little or no water for plants or animals. You see this extreme in many places in Africa.
