Why do some companies advertise submission to several thousand search engines?
In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, typical website traffic was very diverse. It came from many different search engines, directories, link pages, and other indices. Today’s typical website traffic is far from diverse. 98% of all website traffic originates from the top 10 search engines and directories. Most of the indices that those other companies submit your website to will yield no beneficial traffic. They are link farms, email harvesters, etc. that can hurt your website’s good reputation and your rankings in major search engines like Google. Submitting to the most popular reputable search engines and directories is the right way to go.
