Why do some churches have Spires and some Towers?

0

Many churches were built with spires. Hundreds of years ago, the architects could only add a spire on top of a tower. Their building skills could not accommodate a spire on its own from the ground. A square tower was the only feasible option to accommodate a spire. A church was also built in the shape of a cross, with the altar directly under the spire. It gave the impression of looking up to God. With windows added later the light could shine down on the altar and the congregation.
