Why do some apparently identical vehicles have different emission scores?
A few vehicles have different emissions scores even though they are on all outward appearances identical. This is because the manufacturer chose to certify the identical vehicles to different standards: California and Federal. The emissions score is based on emission standards, and in some cases the California standards are more stringent than the Federal standards. In actuality, the emissions from the California vehicle may also be slightly better than those from the Federal vehicle, due to the cleaner fuel which is available in California.
