Why do some ants have wings and some have not?

Ants are in the order hymenoptera, which include bees and wasps. I thought it was funny also that most ants didn’t have wings, but I found that the answer is all about expression of genes. Evidence of wings are present on all of the embryonic castes, or type, of ant, but for some reason certain genes are either turned on in order to permit the wing to fully develop, or turned off, which, in not so many words “kills” the wing. Thats the best answer I could grasp. Hope that helps!
