First off, define “worthless.” Political science may seem worthless to you, but as a future civil servant, understanding political interactions will be a daily feature of my job. While I did balance my political science education with economics and other “applied” courses, I can say that even my “fluffy” courses in undergrad and grad have been useful in the workplace. For example, my history coursework has been useful in understanding how to apply critical thinking in surveying interactions between parties. In other words, understanding how to think critically about the background of a situation is imminently useful when trying to decide on a course of action. My more “artistic” coursework has been useful in understanding media. My time in the private sector was partially spent in marketing work– understanding art was extremely useful there.
