Why do so many older adults with hearing impairments refuse to use hearing aids?
Some people may not admit they are having trouble hearing. But if ignored or untreated, these problems can get worse. Denial is the most important barrier to hearing aid use. Some of the most common reasons that older people give for not using a hearing aid include: • They believe everyone is mumbling or they are not speaking up “on purpose.” • Many older non-users say “My hearing is not bad enough” or, “I can get along without one.” • Some offer the explanation that, “It would make me feel old,” or “I’m too embarrassed to wear one.” • The high cost of hearing aids is a major deterrent to hearing aid use. • Older nonusers report that they know friends or family members who do not like their hearing aids or feel the hearing aids do not help.
