Why do so many fire apparatus respond to simple incidents?

In other words, the firefighters are prepared to deal with the worst that could happen. They are fast, well-trained and pleasant in their response. The dispatcher selects the closest unit to respond to an incident. The fire department’s philosophy is to get our firefighters there as soon as possible. In preparation for the worse case scenario, an ambulance often is dispatched as well. The first unit on the scene may not be an advanced life support unit (a unit with paramedics). Therefore, such a unit also will be responding. There may be two or three fire department vehicles on the scene for what appears to be a “simple” incident. Discovering that we need more units once we arrive is often too late. We have learned from experience that it is better to have too much help than not enough. A structure fire requires a number of people to do all the assigned tasks. Firefighting teams are assigned certain responsibilities such as fire extinguishing, search and rescue, ventilation, salvage, safety, accountability and rapid intervention when firefighters become trapped or injured.

A. The Coeur d Alene Fire Department needs a minimum of 15 to 18 firefighters on scene for any report of a structure fire to meet many of the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Our minimum response to a fire includes: two engines (pumpers); one ladder (aerial) truck; two ambulances; one medic rig, two mutal aid engines and a Chief officer. It may seem like the Calvary but it’s the necessary response.
Units are dispatched according to information received by Dispatch. Many times the type of situation found upon arrival is very different from the situation dispatched. And, part of responding to an emergency situation means being prepared to deal with the worst case scenario. Discovering that we need more units upon arrival is often too late. Experience has taught us that it’s better to have too much help than not enough.
