All Armstrong base mounted pumps are aligned at the factory. Bases are drilled and tapped to accommodate the pump, then the appropriate motor risers are attached, usually by welding the risers to the base, to maintain horizontal alignment of the pump and motor shaft. Shims are installed as necessary, under the motor feet, to ensure parallel and angular alignment of the pump and motor shafts. The pumping unit is shipped, following appropriate inspection and finishing. The stresses built up in the steel bases relieve themselves over time and as the pump and motor are joined with a flexible coupling, the shafts may move out of factory alignment during transportation. Bases are then bolted, at the corners (Also at the mid-length point on larger bases) to some foundation; usually made of concrete.
