Why do scaphoid fractures take so long to heal?
The scaphoid bone of the wrist has a very limited blood supply. Because of this it takes a long time to heal, and it has higher possibility of not healing. Typically, when you can treat it in a cast, it requires 6 weeks in a long-arm cast including the thumb, and another two to three months in a short arm cast to heal. There are surgical alternatives that allow you to get rid of a cast much earlier.
