Why do Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter take so long to work?

This can be a very involved answer. Usually the problem is there is a program running in the system tray which causes the hard drive to be accessed. This will interrupt the Scandisk and Defrag processes. If you have Windows 98, or later, refer to this FAQ for how to disable these programs. I have found that some computers will still have problems with drive accessing even though these programs are disabled, but in most cases, this will work. Also, the size of the hard drive and number of programs and files will affect these processes.
