Why do references imported from an online service or other text file appear strange or garbled?

There are four possible reasons: You have specified the wrong service in the Import Text File/Capture dialog box. Verify that you selected the correct service and format. Your online service (presumably without notifying you) has changed the format used to transmit files. Check with them, or contact the Technical Support department at Research Information Systems. You are trying to import references from a text file format not supported by Reference Manager. Convert the text file to RIS format (see the appendix titled “RIS Format Specifications” for more information). You have edited the text file containing the references you want to import with a word processing program which inserts special formatting codes. To remove the special formatting codes, load the file back into your word processing program and save it as an ASCII text file (sometimes called “DOS text” or “non-document”).
