Why do ranchers put different colors of paint on the back of sheep?”

In England, when we were touring the countryside, we saw ewes with different colored dyes on their backsides above their tail, and we asked the tour guide about it. The guide immediately blushed, and then explained that the farmers had different colored bags of dye that they hung via a harness under the bellies of their rams in a certain season, each ram being a different color. She even pointed out one ram wearing such a contraption in a field that we passed by. The rams and the ewes…ummm…did what nature intended, shall we say. And then the farmers could tell which ewes were probably going to have little lambs the next season, and, with different colors, could even play “who’s your daddy?” with the little lambs. BTW, red, green, and blue seemed to be the popular colors there.
