Why do raceways have banked curves?
Raceways have banked curves so less depends on friction to help the cars get around a steep turn. There are two components of force in a turn. There is an outward force towards the edge of the turn, and a downward force known as normal force. Without friction and bank, the outward force would cause the car to simply run right off the road. Friction also only does so much, since wheels can skid. The banking is an extra measure to help get the car around the turn without going off the track.
