To add to Princess’ answer: An item will float if it displaces a greater mass of water than it’s own mass. A pumpkin contains a lot of air, so it’s generally not that dense. However, if the pumpkin has a hole, then it will sink if the water gets into the hole. Smaller pumpkins (with less air inside as a percentage of volume) may also sink.
