Why Do Priests Wear Fancy Dress During Church Services?
From someone that is studying to be a priest, here is why a priest will wear vestments, specifically a chausible, during Mass: The vestments are meant to symbolize Christ. Each vestment is meant to represent Christ since the Mass is the Sacrifice of Christ. Here is the representation of each vestment. Cincture – Purity of Christ Maniple – Represents the Scourging at the Pillar/Acceptance of suffering Stole – Yoke of Christ Chausble – it is envelopes the priest so that when we see the priest, we are not concerned with “Is this Fr. Bob?” or “Look at that shirt design”. The focus is on the universal role of a priest: offering sacrifice. This vestment is based on the ancient vestments worn by the early Christians. Peace!
