I’m guessing your asking because of the zoo incident the other day; taking that example is more difficult due to the unnatural enviroment so it would be easier to give a more general idea of why a wild animal would do it. Nature isn’t all cutre and cuddly as some nature programs lead you to believe; nature is harsh and cold and works on the principle that any behaviour or physical/physiological adaptation which is likely to produce more offspring/genes in the next generation is favoured. Hence, wen a lion takes over a pride, he slaughters all the young cubs – he is programmed by his genes to do this because they are not genetically related to him and may have an inferior genome. Why should he raise cubs that aren’t his? So, I’m not an expert zooligist, but animals eat their young for the possible reasons: 1)For food in desperation.
