Why do pet rabbits burrow then fill it in?

I wish mine would do that! They just dig the burrow and leave it for me to fill up! No idea why they fill it up I’m afraid. Rabbits burrow because it’s a natural instinct for them, they tend to do it more when mating as they’re making a new home for the family, just like they make nests when pregnant. It’s also great for their claws as it keeps them worn down meaning you don’t have to cut them. I’d recommend you fill the hole up really well, especially if you can get your whole arm into it. Rabbits will quite happily burrow until they get really far underground, and they can escape by burrowing underneath their run and outside. It dosen’t take them long and you may come home today to find a rabbit has escaped into the big wild world! Pack the earth in really well, I put a brick on top of the hole once it’s been filled in as well. I wouldn’t discourage them from digging, it just makes it a bit harder to escape if they have to start a new burrow every time. Best of luck.
