Can watch most genres but not horrors – they freak the hell out of me and very sensitive soul me – Halloween H20 I could walk the streets after dark for 3 months – drove my boyfriend mad and made him understand that I cant watch horrors. Watched the ring a couple of years ago and had to get rid of the tv and had my brother move in for few weeks until he got tired and a i had to move back in with my parents…

Aside from the obvious – because they like them – you could also consider Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Some film genres, for example horror and sci-fi, create a feeling of belonging amongst audience members. The group experience is part of the enjoyment. Another posibility is that the genre allows the audience member to experience fear and benefit from a rush of adrenaline, while in a safe environment. Perhaps the need to repeat the rush felt when watching this type of film encourages the viewer to seek out more and more horrific films in order to experience the same feeling.
