Why do people think that suicidal people should blame themselves? Why don people understand mental illness?
OK. No, you’re absolutely right, people don’t understand mental illness – it’s very hard to understand something that you don’t feel or have never experienced, it’s impossible to relate… I’ve got a personality disorder and nobody understands the way I’m feeling, or why I do the stupid self-destructive things that I do, and it frustrates me ridiculously that nobody gets it, when to me… it’s so flipping blatantly obvious! However… when it comes to suicide, it’s a little different. Because, ultimately, this results in death… and nobody, (and I really do mean NOBODY) benefits from suicide. Don’t get me wrong, I understand suicidal feelings, thoughts tendencies, I know depression and I certainly know how and why somebody can feel desperate enough to want to commit suicide, of course I do, I’ve felt that desperate in my own right… but that’s a long way off from actually doing it… and the actual act of committing suicide is where I don’t think anybody has a good enough excuse.
