Why do people think farting or burping is rude?
This falls into the category of “bodily functions.” There are certain INVOLUNTARY bodily functions, i.e. breathing, hiccuping, sneezing, etc., which cannot be helped, controlled, nor anticipated. Then there are others which CAN be helped, controlled, or anticipated… VOLUNTARY bodily functions, i.e. farting and belching. Bathroom functions also fall into this category, unless one has incontinence, one has control over such functions and can take care of them in PRIVATE. Forcing others to suffer the ill effects of your VOLUNTARY bodily functions IS RUDE. Etiquette dictates that one must consider OTHERS (maybe not above oneself, but at LEAST to CONSIDER THEM at ALL!). In so doing, one does have the options of dismissing themselves to the restroom to “powder their noses”… and allowing themselves to relieve their ill winds, or even saying that one will step outside to get a breath of fresh air, and allow the natural winds to alleviate your foul winds. As for burping, I am assuming you a
