High fructose corn sweetener had not yet been invented. Food was not nearly as processed and there were very few food additives unlike there are today. Also kids grew up outdoors, running, playing, riding their bicycles, not parked in front of a television, computer or video game system. People had very active lifestyles and as such burned many more calories. These days most foods are highly processed, loaded with chemical additives, chemical flavorings and chemical colorants. It is all but impossible to find foods which are not genetically modified or loaded with high fructose corn sweetener (HFCS). HFCS is a major contributor to obesity, type 2 diabetes and ADD/ADHD.
