Why do people think changing boy names into Girly Spellings more feminine?
Changing the spelling doesn’t make a name sound more girly but makes it look more girly. People do this so that people can tell the difference between girls and boys and therefore give girls pink things and boys blue things. My eldest is called Ashley (correct spelling) and she is a girl but can I find anything in pink spelt Ashley? No. If I want Ashley written in pink then I should have spelt it Ashleigh. This really annoys me because Ashley, in the 1880’s, was a popular female name which was taken over by boys in the late 1980’s but they seem to have the dominance on articles with the name. Changing the spelling, in my opinion, is just as “fashionable” as giving children different names, like Apple, Fifi Tinkerbell etc. Give me traditional spelling any day!
