Why do people talk about giving up something for Lent?
The act of giving up something during the season of Lent has many rich and significant meanings and results. One of the most significant values is the incredible solidarity we sense with Jesus as we suffer and sacrifice so that we experience more of God in our lives and in our church as a whole. Giving up a meal, a bad habit or a little sleep reminds us how dependent we have become on things and activities outside of God. We deny ourselves something during this season so that God can fill the empty places in our souls instead of us trying to fill them with things that are taking our focus away from the Lord.
