Why do people put stones on jewish headstones?
In the olden days graves markers were usually piles of stones. If they got scattered by the weather or other means the relatives would re-pile the stones as a show of respect. Now the placing of pebbles is way to show respect and say this grave is tended and cared for. Another custom is derived from shepherds who kept count of their sheep with pebbles. A pebble on the headstone is a reminder that this is one of Gods own flock.
