Why do people put dogs in crates?
Crates were originally used for travelling and transporting working dogs like huskies, or show dogs, long distances. Their crate would double up as a sleeping area when they reached their destination. The dog would therefore feel secure because it had its personal space with it all the way. The same principle is applied now if using a crate in the home. It is the dog’s personal space. The same as a bed/under the table, whereever your dog likes to go. The added bonus of a crate is you can restrict your dog to it to assist with house training, prevent destruction if there are anxiety or other behaviour problems. However, locking a dog in a crate should only be used as a training aid – not a punishment and certainly not while you are out all day at work!!
