Why do people make babies before getting married?
There are millions of people in the world who are not religious and who do not believe that two people must be married before having children. Marriage is not a magic state of being that automatically makes you more committed, more loving, more able to be a good parent or more able to make sensible decisions. If a couple is planning on having a child, as long as they are committed to each other, then nothing should stop them from fulfilling their wishes. My husband and I planned and had our twins before we got married. If it were not for citizenship reasons, we probably would never have married because it is largely irrelevant to us. We love each other and are committed to each other – that’s all that matters. Having a sheet of paper saying that our union is recognised in the eyes of God is meaningless to us as we are both Atheists.
