I don’t think people look down on people who have babies out of wedlock anymore, however, they do look down on people who have babies they can’t afford and who expect the state to pay for them and support them. In the UK when I had my family, hubby and I could only afford 2 children and stopped having them at that time. There were women nearby who had several kids and who didn’t have a husband, but they got subsidies and grants and cheap day-care, so, yes, I felt it wasn’t fair. I couldn’t get a place in a day-care centre for my son, but the unmarried woman down the street got a place for her kid – free! I would have loved more children, but couldn’t afford them, but the single women seemed to be popping them out all the time, without worrying how they were going to raise them. I had to make do with second hand things for my kids to save money, but when I offered a single mother (sister of one of my friends) one of our beds for her 4 year old, she said – No thanks, Social Services woul
