Why do people in the south of the US, have the highest aamountof English ancestry?
I am not sure this is correct, but if it is, it is because the south was relatively unaffected by the waves of immigration that happened after the Civil War. Before then, the English were the major source of immigration, along with the African slaves that were forecibly moved into the South. After the Civil War, most of the immigration was into the northeast, where there was more job opportunities. In the South, the reliance on agriculture and the existence of the freed slaves limited the amount of labor that was necessary, while the industrialized North needed more workers, so they encouraged immigration from all over Europe. The rest of the country was also more diverse than the South due to the Spanish and Mexican influence, along with the lower population density in the South, which meant that most of the people who moved into the rest of the country came from other areas of the country.
