Why do people have a fear of roller coasters?
I have a slight fear of roller coasters, specifically the T-Bar restraint, although I call it the “crotch bar”. I reallly limit myself to these kind of rides because I feel safer with the over-the-shoulder restraints (OTSRs). OTSRs basically connect me to the car and give me a feeling of true security. The “crotch bars”, however, don’t give me such a feeling of security as they do “Holy crap, I’m going to fall out of the ride and die!” Also, the height may be part of the problem, but the lift hill and first drop may be the case of most people’s fears. The suspense of the ominous first drop going up the lift hill can sometimes send people into panic attacks. Also, on most roller coasters, the first drop is the highest drop, so falling from the highest point of the roller coaster and just looking down can still scare the crap out of people.
