Why do people hate dog breeders?
Personally I do not hate reputable breeders. Breeders who extensively health test their dogs and b*tches, to ensure as far as possible that they are not breeding pups who are more likely to suffer from ill health in the future. The lines of the sire and dam are also extremely important, to ensure as far as possible the health of the pups. Some less than reputable breeders who like to see some ‘red’ (denoting Championship status) on their pedigrees, could take their (untested) bitches to a (untested) Champion, produce a fine litter on paper, but the puppies could suffer serious health problems.
What many people dislike about “breeders” is that the majority of them are irresponsible backyard breeders. They have no regard for breed standards, showing or conformation or the health and longevity of the animals they produce. They will see somone in the street, at the park, at a store with (maybe) the same breed and offer to mate their dog with this other persons. No selection for improved genetics etc. There is wanton creation of new pets, many of which are sold for ludicrous sums of money when often they end up surrendered or euthanised after they are no longer cute puppies. Good for you for microchipping your pups and ensuring they have good homes, but realise that a majority of the folk’s out there who call themselves breeders don’t even do that much. Once the money is in their hands, the dog (and all its potential problems) is no longer their responsibility.
We are against IRRESPONSIBLE breeding. IRRESPONSIBLE breeders: 1) do NOT test breeding animals for genetic disorders like hip dysplasia, patella, elbow, and heart defects through OFA, eye problems via CERF, and VonWillebrand’s via VetGen. 2) do not show or work their dogs to prove they are of top breeding quality. 3) breed animals with NO regard for the breed standard, and often don’t even know what it is, or how canine anatomy works. They really don’t CARE. 4) have little to no knowledge of prenatal and post-natal care of the bi- tch, or how to handle parturition. 5) do not rescue their breed, or assist rescue in any way 6) do not screen homes and offer to take back pups at any time for any reason. Nor do they insist on spay/neuter for non-breeding or pet quality pups. IRRESPONSIBLE is IRRESPONSIBLE, no matter how you try to paint it. I have NO problem with resposnible breeders, and am glad to assist anyone wanting to become a RESPONSIBLE breeder.
